Behaviour InterventionBehaviour Intervention

We understand the challenges that children with autism face, and we know that sometimes these challenges result in behaviours that create barriers to learning, limit your child's independence and cause stress to your family.  We take a practical approach to reducing challenging behaviour by developing an understanding of why the behaviour is happening.

We often find that children with autism engage in challenging behaviours because they do not have the appropriate skill base to get their needs met.  On a practical level that means that they might stand in the kitchen and scream, rather than say, "I'd like some juice."  They might hit out at their brother or sister when they try to play with them, because they cannot say "That's my toy!  I'm playing with it!"  They might hit themselves or their environment because they cannot say, "I don't want to do this right now, I need a break."

As a team, we can work with your child and family to help facilitate a reduction in challenging behaviours by replacing them with appropriate, meaningful and functional behaviours that allow your child to be a positive and integral part of your family.  We can help you set up teaching programmes that can help your child develop the skills they need to communicate with you, and to help you use the most appropriate strategies to communicate effectively with your child.  We also help you use positive, pro-active strategies in your home environment to further reduce the likelihood of those challenging behaviours take place.

Through a process of functional assessment we can identify what skills your child should develop so that the challenging behaviour is reduced and how you can best go about addressing the behaviours.    Through our expertise in Applied Behaviour Analysis we provide your family with an understanding of the challenging behaviour, design a Behaviour Support Plan and offer support in the delivery of this plan.

Each Behaviour Plan is individualised to each child and each behaviour.  It is only through careful collaboration and investigation that this plan can be devised accurately.  The intensity and duration of our intervention is dependent upon the unique circumstances surrounding the behaviour targeted for reduction.  Using daily record keeping and ongoing communication, we are able to assess the efficacy of the intervention and to make changes as necessary, ensuring that no time is lost.

If your child is exhibiting a challenging behaviour that you require help with, please do not hesitate to contact us and we can arrange a time to conduct a Functional Assesment Interview and start the intervention process.
